Welcome to the website of Jane Elizabeth Cullum, fine artist.
I was born near London and spent my teenage years on the Isle of Wight. After attending university in the UK and Canada I worked for several years as a speech and language therapist in the NHS, and following further postgraduate training, as a freelance dance/movement therapist in private practice.
I have been a full- time painter since 2016, and am passionate about the importance of art, movement, nature and creativity in the development of the whole person.
My work is inspired by my travels through the mountains, valleys and coastlines of Wales, Scotland, mainland Europe and New Zealand, and more recently by the beautiful and ancient landscapes of the English-Welsh borderlands where I now live.
I use mainly water-based media: inks, acrylic and watercolour, depending on the subject matter and my mood. If I'm feeling contemplative, then I work quite loosely with watercolour, letting the paint flow and blend in surprising patterns. At other times I like to work more energetically (usually with acrylics), layering paint on, scraping it off and scoring marks into the surface, creating interesting textures.
I rarely plan out paintings beforehand as I prefer to work intuitively in the initial stages, following the impulse of my feelings about a place, a view or a situation, and refining the details of the composition later.
I am currently exploring the use of natural materials in mark- making: earth pigments, inks, minerals twigs and hand-made papers, to create work with the least environmental impact.
I exhibit regularly, and my paintings have found buyers from as far afield as Peru, Sweden and the USA.
